Beschreibung

This book is an original and provoking international collection of theoretical, analytical, and situated essays from different disciplinary and cultural perspectives that engage critically with nostalgia as home- and timesickness in troubled times. By bringing together media, memory, and nostalgia studies, the volume focuses on the functional relationship between media and nostalgia placing emphasis on current urgencies such as climate change, social inequities, new and old forms of media extractivism, and political polarization. Ranging from investigations into online communities, media art and archaeology, media industries and publics to political communication, vintage media collectors, and archives of the margins, the authors engage with qualitative methodologies, and unsuspected viewpoints. To tackle the question of nostalgic (be)longings as hybrid experiences of reinventing the past, present, and future, the volume comes forth with nuanced conceptualizations such as tropical, disguised or speculative nostalgia and works with scrutiny the repercussions of political, social, cultural, and technological change on our current experiences of loss, grief, and hope.

Katharina Niemeyer is professor for media theory at the Université du Québec à Montréal (École des médias), codirector of the research-creation group mXlab, co-founder of the International Media and Nostalgia Network as well as the indisciplinary art group Rabbitresearch, and member of the research center Cultures-Arts-Sociétés

Stimmen zu »Experiences of Nostalgia«

“This interdisciplinary collection is a landmark volume in media, memory, and nostalgia studies. Bringing together essays by an international group of scholars, it offers conceptually innovative studies spanning online communities, archives, climate change, and media art, revealing nostalgia as a dynamic cultural practice that shapes belonging, identity, and imagined futures.” (Abigail De Kosnik, Professor in the Berkeley Center for New Media, UC Berkeley, USA)

“This collection marks a coming-of-age for nostalgia studies, moving beyond the justification of nostalgia as an object of study to interrogate the ways nostalgia is implicated in the existential challenges of late modernity – from climate change to the resurgence of illiberalism. The fascinating range of international and interdisciplinary contributions position nostalgia as a critical mode of engaging with both the past and a precarious future.” (Emily Keightley, Professor of Media and Memory Studies, Loughborough University, UK)
