This edited volumes consolidates cutting-edge research on the expansion and internationalization of Italian banking during the first one hundred years after unification. It aims to show that, unlike other major European powers where profit-seeking businesses primarily drove foreign banking expansion, Italy had a much more politically motivated financial strategy that was often tied to state-guaranteed investments in Italian political and diplomatic influence.
Bringing together contributions from top researchers in Italian banking history, the volume investigates the objectives and strategies of Italian banks in foreign markets. This is set in the context of various challenges and contradictions arising from a capital-scarce nation pursuing international banking expansion, including reliance on interbank cooperation and management of remittances from emigrants. The book explores examples of direct and indirect investments, foreign exchange discounts, and the role of Catholic finance and the Italian central bank, as well as presenting new research on how Italian financial ambition connected to imperial ambition, both in existing Italian colonies and further afield. This book will be a fascinating read for scholars of Italian financial history, as well as economic historians more broadly.
Luciano Maffi is Associate Professor at the Department of Economics and Management of the University of Parma. Previously, he was Lecturer at the same department and Lecturer at the University of Salento in Lecce, as well as a research fellow at Bocconi University in Milan, the University of Genoa, and the University of Brescia. In 2014 and 2015, for several months, he was a visiting researcher at Blackfriars Hall at the University of Oxford. He has published other books with Palgrave including Private Bankers in the Italian 19th Century: The Parodi of Genoa in the National and International Context and Religious Tourism and the Italian Economy, 1873 - 1950: The Development of Catholic Pilgrimages as Mass Phenomenon, forthcoming in 2025.
Giampaolo Conte is Assistant Professor in Economic History at University of Rome 3, Italy. He has been Visiting Scholar and Fellow at Cambridge University and the London School of Economics. He has been a guest lecturer at Ghent University and Visiting Lecturer at the International Institute of Social Studies ISS of the Erasmus University Rotterdam in The Hague (Netherlands).
