Interpersonal Interaction as the Matrix of Human Thinking

When we study individuals who do things in real time, i.e., people engaged in dynamic contexts, the whole situation being conceived as a system, we adopt the theoretical position according to which all human actions are filled with sêmeion (Greek translation of “signs”) and are not free from culture; they are not actions ‘full stop’. Research in the psychology of interaction thus concretely highlights that (i) joint action is the constituent of human evolution, and that (ii) joint action is carried out in meaningful contexts, made up of human beings and their artifacts. This is the common orientation that unites all the contributors to this collective book. The authors both assume that reasoning and conversation (even with glance, gesture, and behaviours only, that is to say non-linguistic interactions) develop at the same time, and that conversation is a relevant metaphor of human thinking. The various chapters present empirical contributions with European participants (infants and toddlers, preschoolers, and school-aged children) and show why various methods investigating human development are worth revisiting by the psychology of interaction. In such a contemporary context, where digitalization simplifies interactions, where research in psychology naturalizes the human mind and methodologies atomize the analysed behaviours, the book meticulously describes how researchers dealing with interaction re-translate the main key-concepts in psychology, offering diverse dynamic analyses of interaction.
