This open access book examines the political economy of data governance and digitalization in Africa. Written through the lenses of public policy and political economy, chapters address critical topics such as the regulation of data in cross-border trade, artificial intelligence, the state of interoperability, digital trade in the context of African Continental Free Trade Area Agreement, as well as data governance issues in specific contexts and industries, such as education and sustainable finance. It also proposes key steps to achieve harmonized data governance across the continent. It will appeal to all those interested in data governance, digitalization and public policy.

Izak Atiyas is an independent researcher and a research fellow at Economic Research Forum. Previously he was associate professor of economics at Sabanci University in Istanbul, Turkey for 20 years, until he retired in 2019.

Abbi M. Kedir is Director of Research at the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). He previously worked as Associate Professor at the University of Sheffield, UK.

Victor Murinde is Executive Director at the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC). He previously worked as Professor at the School of Finance and Management, SOAS London, UK. 

Scholastica Odhiambo was manager of Research at AERC and currently is a Senior Lecturer of Economics at Maseno University, Kenya.
