After fifty years of slowing productivity, declining trust, and rising inequality, leaders know something is broken—but few agree on what to fix. In The Innovation Age, Jamie Heywood offers a radical yet pragmatic answer: the modern company is mis-designed for the world it now inhabits.

From courtroom battles at Uber to lessons drawn from cities, communities, and even the human brain, Heywood shows why hierarchies suppress innovation, why shareholder primacy distorts purpose, and why the most creative systems are modular, diverse, and collaborative.

Clear-eyed, original and deeply practical, this open access book is a manifesto for corporate change. It shows what each of us—employees, citizens, and policy makers—must do to build the companies of the future. For leaders, it explains how to organise for innovation rather than efficiency, how to balance autonomy with alignment, and how to turn companies back into what they were always meant to be—society’s most powerful problem-solving institutions.

Jamie Heywood has three decades’ experience leading companies at the intersection of innovation, growth, and regulation. He ran Uber’s Northern European businesses through the crisis that followed Travis Kalanick’s exit, led Amazon’s UK electronics divisions through a period of extreme growth, and, while he successfully launched Virgin Mobile in India, he was also forced to close down their business in China when the regulatory environment shifted. Jamie has seen firsthand how companies adapt—or fail to—in a changing world. Today, he serves on the board of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust and as a Senior Advisor to Principia, an ethics consultancy. He holds an MA in Philosophy and Psychology from Oxford University and an MBA from INSEAD.

“Executives usually write books about themselves. Jamie Heywood has drawn on his experiences to write about something much more interesting: how companies can fulfil their massive problem-solving potential. The result is thought-provoking, lucid and surprising.” (Andrew Palmer, Executive Editor & Bartleby columnist at The Economist)

“The most insightful book on business strategy since Gary Hamel and CK Prahalad’s Competing for the Future. It seeks to answer the managerial question that is more important than any other: why, over the last half-century, has the pace of invention and innovation been declining?. Few people in either business or academia even acknowledge the question’s importance let alone seek to resolve it.  The book will cause a stir in both the business world and the business school community. I commend it highly.” (Jules Goddard, Professor of Marketing and Fellow at London Business School, UK; Member of the Academic Council at CEDEP, France)

The Innovation Age is a groundbreaking book that will revolutionise your understanding of companies and their unrealised potential as society's most powerful problem-solving entities.  A must-read for anyone who enjoys looking at the world through a fresh lens. It will challenge your preconceptions about corporations and inspire you to envision a future in which they fulfil their ultimate potential and purpose as powerful agents of positive change.  The Innovation Age is an invitation to reimagine the role of companies in shaping a better world for all.” (Michael Muthukrishna, Associate Professor of Economic Psychology at LSE & NYU, and author of “A Theory of Everyone”)

“A wise and timely contribution to the most important debate we are not having: what should the relationship between the company and society be?” (Jean Marc Huet, Chair of Lonza & Heineken Holding, Ex-CFO of Unilever)

“Much has been written about the problems of the UK: the toxic consequences of financialisation of its economy, its dismal growth in GDP per capita, and its lack of growth in productivity. Looking to the future there are profound questions over whether AI will result in creative destruction. To make sense of these complex issues, and suggest a constructive way forward, Jamie Heywood brings an unusual mix of mastery of relevant scholarship and experience of making innovation work in successful private enterprises. His new book The Innovation Age explains what we need to do to change the external and internal governance of companies to deliver his promise of building them to solve our problems and not to create them.” (Gwyn Bevan, Emeritus Professor of Policy Analysis in the Department of Management at the LSE, UK)
