Algeria is evolving in an international system that is shifting toward a multi-polar order, and this book is about understanding, analyzing, and detailing aspects of the foreign policy led by Algeria between 2020 and 2024, during the first presidential term of Mr. Abdelmadjid Tebboune. Our main assumption is that Algeria, a country that was one of the leaders of the Third-World during the Cold War and a partner of the West during the global war on terror, had to adapt to the new international order of the twenty-first century, by imagining a new role for Algeria on the international arena, in continuity with the principles of its revolutionary history, a country that tries to shape the future of the international system by defending a reformist multilateral scheme and with an ambition of remaining one of the "voices of the Global South", to be reckoned with by the main actors of the world order.

“Terbaoui has written a very thorough account of Algerian foreign policy highlighting Algeria's ambition to be a leader of the 'Global South.' Algeria has perceived itself as the central and leading actor of the Maghreb pursuing its national interest through a realist/constructivist lens. Ever since winning its independence from France in 1962, Algeria has deemed itself a leader of a Third World coalition in the state system. The book meticulously presents the highlights of an activist policy rooted in the Maghreb including an extensive account of its rivalry with Morocco centred on the Western Sahara issue. The author features Algeria's strong support of the Palestinian cause and builds outward toward the Middle East and Asia. Arguing that Algeria has always "punched above its weight" in world affairs, the account is meticulously documented containing 235 footnotes.” (Robert A Mortimer is Professor of Political Science, Haverford College, USA)
