Beschreibung

This book is the first academic work to comprehensively examine fact-checking practices beyond Western democracies, bringing together exclusively Global South voices. Moving past a literature often shaped by Western perspectives, it offers insider insights from scholars and practitioners working in challenging environments marked by limited resources, political instability, and restricted access to data. Volume 1 provides an overview of the Global South fact-checking ecosystem, highlighting contrasts with Western democracies and examining the institutions behind fact-checking organizations, collaborative initiatives, and the growing role of emerging technologies. Among its key contributions, the volume introduces the concept of “checktainment” and examines the use of AI for fact-checking in non-Western contexts, showing how methods are adapted to local conditions. Grounded in direct experience, the book fills a critical gap in understanding how misinformation is confronted across Latin America, Africa, and Asia.
