Beschreibung

During his presidency, FDR led the American public to believe that the US government could set policy that would transform the economy. This book argues that this assumption, which ultimately became embedded into the general American psyche, has impacted our economy today in more ways than one.

Robert E. Wright breaks down the negative societal impact of the New Deal throughout this book. The chapters highlight the lasting influence of these policies, providing new perspectives and never-before-seen archival research related to FDR's policies. The book provides insight into how assumptions of governmental intervention in the economy have shifted the direction of the economy over time. It also dives into socioeconomic topics related to social justice, critiquing the New Deal in its original and historical contexts.

Wright brings a long-term public-choice perspective to the New Deal, providing interdisciplinary insights into socioeconomic topics such as gender, race, and climate. The resulting book is ideal for those interested in economics, American history, law, and policy.

Robert E. Wright is a lecturer in the economics department at Central Michigan University. He has written, cowritten, edited, and coedited several books on US economic policy and its history. He has taught courses in economics, policy, and business at the University of Virginia, New York University, Augustana University, and Georgia State College and University. He was a member of the senior research faculty for the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) and a policy analyst at The Property and Environment Research Center (PERC). His most recent work includes Debating Universal Basic Income (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022) and The History and Evolution of the North American Wildlife Conservation Model (Palgrave Macmillan, 2022).

Stimmen zu »FDR’s Long New Deal«

“Robert E. Wright’s new book was a joy to read. Wright shows almost encyclopedic knowledge of both the New Deal, the preceding Hoover era, and the broader intellectual and social context. If you want to understand why the depression lasted so long, this is a good place to start. This well-written book has a sharp analysis and comes to conclusions which will often surprise readers.” (David Beito, Professor Emeritus, Department of History, University of Alabama and author of “The New Deal’s War on the Bill of Rights”)

“Economic historian Robert E. Wright offers an objective and devastating takedown of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s economic policies that exacerbated the recession he inherited and that have afflicted Americans through subsequent administrations with increasing misery and loss of freedom all the way through recent bouts of inflation and unrest. If you want to know how we got here and how to get out of the New Deal quagmire, read this book.” (Mary Grabar, Resident Fellow, Alexander Hamilton Institute for the Study of Western Civilization and author of “Debunking Howard Zinn” and “Debunking the 1619 Project”)

“The philosophy that best explains the New Deal is public choice theory. Yet, to date, there has been no rigorous public-choice treatment of the 1930s. Wright supplies the missing book.” (Amity Shlaes, Chair, Officers and Trustees of the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation and author of “Forgotten Man”)
