“This engaging and timely book is unique in addressing the relation between left-wing populism and the gender equality agenda. It contributes to advance the academic knowledge of populism by tackling the so-far unexplored connection of feminism, gender equality policies and left-wing populism.”
– MariaCaterina La Barbera, Institute of Philosophy, Spanish National Research Council, Madrid, Spain
This book investigates the relation between left-wing populism and feminist politics by analysing three specific aspects. First, whether left-wing populist parties promote gender equality policies, against charges of a general inconsistency between both political projects; Second, how do these parties form their policy-making coalitions in the field of gender equality; Third, how much impact on policy do women’s movements have when left-wing populists are in power. The book is focused on the case of Bolivia during the first twelve years of Evo Morales's presidency. Theempirical analysis is based on the qualitative content analysis of documents and semi-structured interviews with women’s movements’ activists, policy-makers and experts in women’s movements. The central issue of the book is present throughout the volume, but each empirical chapter can be also read as a semi-autonomous analysis of a specific aspect of the relation between left-wing populism and feminist politics, which increases the interest of the book for different audiences including experts in gender and politics and feminist activists, specialists in Latin American politics, indigenous politics and social movements.
Pablo Castaño is Researcher in Politics and currently works at Barcelona's City Council.

“This engaging and timely book is unique in addressing the relation between left-wing populism and the gender equality agenda. It contributes to advance the academic knowledge of a world-wide spreading social and political phenomenon by tackling the so-far unexplored connection of feminism, gender equality policies and left-wing populism. Retrieving lessons for policymaking from South America, it bridges the gap between theory and praxis with empirical-based recommendations to policymakers and activists to advance towards social change from an intersectional and decolonial perspective. Scholars in the field of gender and politics, social policies, political sociology, social movements, populism, and Latin American studies should read this book”. (MariaCaterina La Barbera, Institute of Philosophy, Spanish National Research Council, Madrid, Spain)
“Populism and feminism are crucial phenomena in contemporary politics that are still rarely studied together. This important book fills a gap in the literature by analysing the relationship between left populism and feminist politics in Evo Morales’ Bolivia. By engaging with theories of public policy, intersectionality, political representation and feminist movements, the book opens new fascinating paths to investigate possibilities and obstacles for feminist politics in left populist parties. A compelling and captivating reading for both populism and gender and politics scholars”. (Emanuela Lombardo, Associate Professor of Political Science, Madrid Complutense University, Spain)“This is a comprehensive study of the complex relation between feminist movements and left-wing populism. Through a thorough analysis of the Bolivian case, this book contributes to research and theoretical discussions on the political determinants of gender equality policies especially in the Latin American context” (Margarita León, Associate Professor of Political Science, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain)
“A thorough analysis of the complex relationship between populism and feminism in Bolivia. A great contribution to our understanding of how left-wing populism relates to women's and feminist organisations in the development of gender equality policies”. (Eva Anduiza, Associate Professor of Political Science, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain)
