Beschreibung

This book builds upon critiques of development in the disability domain by investigating the necessity and implications of theorising disability from the Global South and how development policies and practices pertaining to disabled people in such contexts might be improved by engaging with their voices and agency. The author focuses on the lived experiences of disabled people in Burkina Faso, while situating these experiences, where necessary, in the wider national and regional contexts. She explores development agencies’ interventions with disabled people and the need to re-think these practices and ideologies which are often framed within western contexts. This work will appeal to policy makers, NGOs, academics, students and researchers in the fields of development and disability studies.

Lara Bezzina is an independent researcher, activist, practitioner and consultant working in the fields of disability and development. She workswith various NGOs in Malta and internationally and is a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta, Malta.

Stimmen zu »Disability and Development in Burkina Faso«

“This book provides in-depth insights into disabled peoples' lived experiences in Burkina Faso through care-full qualitative research, participatory video and diagramming. The postcolonial lens offers a powerful critique of the role of INGOs, the state and other development agencies in ignoring the voices of disabled people and demonstrates the crucial importance of theorising disability from the global South.” (Ruth Evans, Associate Professor, University of Reading, UK)

“Lara Bezzina's carefully crafted work illustrates the important role of disability advocates, activists and allies within the global south. An important work that examines key issues in collaboration with disabled people in the Global South. Highly recommended for disability researchers, development scholars and global south theorists.” (Karen Soldatic, Associate Professor, Western Sydney University, Australia)

“A welcome addition to debates about disability and development and a much-needed engagement with the lived experiences of disabled people in poorer countries. Lara Bezzina draws on postcolonial theory and participatory research in Burkina Faso to enrich understanding of development processes affecting disabled people in the global South. By foregrounding their experiences, this book makes an important contribution to building inclusive and effective development strategies for disabled people in countries where they experience multiple forms of marginalisation.” (Cheryl McEwan, Professor, Durham University, UK)
