The Floorplan is pleased to announce the publication of the 2025 revised edition of Ayoung Kim: Synthetic Storyteller, the most comprehensive monograph to date on the internationally acclaimed artist Ayoung Kim.
Over the past eighteen years, Kim has dismantled the boundaries between human, machine, object, time, and space, weaving speculative fictions that interrogate the present and imagine possible futures. Her hybrid narratives integrate geopolitics, mythology, technology, technoprecarity, and speculative temporalities, resulting in far-reaching syntheses that connect biopolitics and border controls, ancestral origins and imminent futures, the memories of stones and virtual memories. Her practice unfolds across diverse media, including moving image, video, sonic fiction, VR, game simulation, performance, and text.
The first edition, published in 2024, brought together critical essays by Wonhwa Yoon, Jinshil Lee, Chanda Prescod-Weinstein, Nanna Heidenreich, and Chien-Hung Huang, alongside scripts and texts by the artist herself. It also presented a selection of works from 2007 to 2022 through stills and installation views.
The 2025 revised edition expands upon this foundation. It incorporates new works and exhibition views produced between 2022 and 2025, an updated interview with the artist, and upgraded production quality, including enhanced paper and design. The bilingual volume takes on an innovative inverted structure: Korean and English sections function as independent publications, joined at the center by full-page images of Kim’s works that bridge the two halves. Echoing the artist’s own practice, the design employs “glitch-like” insertions of image and text fragments within the body of the book, creating a reading experience that resonates with her speculative narratives.As the most extensive introduction yet to cover Ayoung Kim’s eighteen years of artistic trajectory, Ayoung Kim: Synthetic Storyteller serves both as documentation of her multifaceted practice and as a guide to understanding her as a “synthetic” storyteller who forges new modes of narrative and worldbuilding in contemporary art.
