The artist catalog "Collateral Damage" encompasses the works from 2019 to 2023 by the artist Julia Emslander.
Julia Emslander (born 1989) is a transdisciplinary artist based in Berlin and Munich. In 2022, she graduated with honors from the class of Gregor Hildebrandt, receiving the Erwin and Gisela Foundation Prize. During her studies, she earned a nomination for the Federal Award for Art Students. Emslander has showcased her works in various esteemed venues, including Villa Stuck, C/O Berlin, Galerie Klüser, Spinnerei Leipzig, and HLM Marseille.
Furthermore, Emslander is a performer and vocalist in the Techno-Punk band FRAUENSTRASSE, with which she was awarded the Pop Production Grant, among other accolades. The band released their debut record with the Alternative Fakten label.
As a multidisciplinary artist, Julia Emslander works with painting, drawings, performance, installation, music and sculpture. She questions in particular in the use of material, static as well as singular perspectives of perception, socio-cultural narratives, the role of the (painting) object in space as well as a corporeality from a feminist point of view. Through the absence of chromatics as well as the reduction of compositional elements, Emslanders works offer a counter-position to information excess and content overload.
