Bayreuth Baroque, the new Festival in the Markgräfliches Opernhaus (Margravial Opera House) – with an auditorium in its original state of 1748 – is focusing under the artistic direction of Max Emanuel Cencic on opere serie that have not been performed for three hundred years. In 2020 the programme includes Nicola Antonio Porpora’s grotesque about inheritance ‘Carlo il calvo’, premiered in Rome in 1738, and Leonardo Vinci’s political allegory ‘Gismondo’, premiered in 1727 also in Rome . Vinci and Porpora were fierce rivals in the first third of the eighteenth century for the top rank as the most frequently performed opera composers. They hit a completely different tone from their contemporaries who are more familiar to us, Handel, Vivaldi, Hasse and so forth. For the first time, this programme book introduces you to them in detail.
