From the book we can see how Dr. Ross Colquhoun’s life was in China: What he encountered, experienced, what he liked and disliked, what he expected and what was unexpected. His life in Tianjin made a big difference to him. To some degree I can confidently say his life in Tianjin and China changed him. He is now a different Dr. Ross Colquhoun from the time before he ever came to China. He was a fair-minded man before he visited China, as he was not swayed by the “mainstream” opinions on China in the West. As he said, “I questioned the stereotypes from the start.” The “stereotypes”, as I interpret it were the “unfair” judgements of China and the Chinese people. I have personally met a few Westerners who were overly critical about anything China did, simply because they wore coloured glasses before they landed in China. Ross is no ordinary type: He had an enquiring mind, he looked into matters, he asked questions, he reached out and talked to people of any rank in society. You can see in his book how many people he has talked with. He got into the homes of local Chinese. That made a big difference. He wrote this book on China for no other reason than as a record of his experience in China and to share them with his Chinese friends and readers. He writes honestly and beautifully from his innocent heart.
