Beschreibung

"...Harland shows he can meet the challenging task of using the transcripts in a well-written, descriptive way ... It does give you a good sense of being there." - Brian Harvey "... It could become a classic 'must have' for anyone who has a desire to know what is it all about. It is astonishing that it hasn't been done before." - David Woods
The first book to combine the astronauts own words and pictures taken at the same time to provide an important historical document about lunar exploration
A "before" and "after" discussion of the results of the moon landing programme and its contribution to our understanding of planetary geology

In this updated and expanded commemorative Second Edition of the popular Exploring the Moon, David Harland recounts the history of manned and unmanned lunar discovery. The text recounts such missions as the Rangers which returned television images before crashing into the Moon, the Surveyors which 'soft landed' to investigate the nature of the surface, and the Lunar Orbiters which mapped prospective Apollo landing sites. Harland then outlines the historic landing by Apollo 11 in terms of what was discovered, and how over the next several missions the program was progressively extended to enable each of the final three missions to spend three days on comprehensive geological investigations. As talk turns to the resumption of human missions to the Moon, this book sums up achievements since the 'flags and footprints' of the Apollo 11 landing in 1969, and celebrates the fortieth anniversary of that momentous event.

From reviews of the first edition -

LUNAR & PLANETARY INFORMATION BULLETIN
"EXPLORING THE MOON is very well illustrated…All aficionados of the Apollo program will find much to appreciate in [this book].”

"…this is an interesting account of one of the most extraordinary decades in history…a very different book. David Harland probably knows more about the nuts and bolts of the Russian and American space programs than any other author and it shows.”
