Carotid Artery Stenting: A Practical Guide offers beginners a contemporary practical handbook.

As the popularity of Carotid Artery Stenting (CAS) grows, so too does the demand in knowledge and guidance for this technically challenging and high risk procedure.

The book aids optimal outcomes during early experiences with CAS by helping to avoid many common pitfalls. The text runs through common themes of CAS such as carotid anatomy variations, material selection, imaging during CAS, pharamacological support regimes and post procedural care serving to minimise the potential risk of error and further complications.

This is an essential handbook for physicians of all backgrounds, particularly Vascular Radiologists, Neurointerventionists, Vascular Surgeons, Interventional Cardiologists, and Neurologists/Stroke Physicians.

This book is written by a number of authors from around the globe, and edited by Gerry Stansby and Sumaira Macdonald, two experts in the field of vascular radiology and surgery. Sumaira Macdonald is also responsible for the carotid artery stenting program in Newcastle making this book a reliable source of information and guidance in the domain of CAS.

In the management of vascular disease, there has been an inexorable drive towards less invasive endovascular treatments. This has substantially altered the attitudes of patients, clinicians and health care providers.

Endovascular treatment of carotid stenosis for stroke is no exception. Several trials are running concurrently; these are comparing carotid endarterectomy (CEA) with the less invasive alternative, carotid stenting (CAS). There is already evidence that CAS may be preferable in certain patient populations i.e. those deemed to be at high surgical risk. Furthermore both procedures have comparable benefits in terms of survival free of ipsilateral stroke between three to five years post-procedure.

State-of-the-art CAS (with regards use of all available technical refinements) is all but five years old. There is considerable interest from clinicians from a variety of clinical backgrounds and from industry in this technique and, therefore, scope for a contemporary practical guide.

Illustrated guide to variations in carotid anatomy and relevance to patient selection Practical guide to selection of material, thus optimising outcomes by avoidance of use of inappropriate material Guide to imaging during CAS, thus avoiding errors which may occur through inadequate visualization of anatomy Guide to post procedural care including the management of complications
