In this book, an internationally known team of researchers publish state-of-the-art results that detail the application of synthetic, petroleum-based polymers in the form of carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes and fibers, and micro- and nanofibrils as reinforcements for polymer composites. These organic materials are distinct from polymer composites with mineral reinforcement due to specific mechanical properties that allow the manufacture of lightweight products, of particular importance in aircrafts and transportation vehicles.
With over fifty contributors and twenty-three comprehensive chapters, this book provides another approach for the replacement of glass- and other inorganic fibers as reinforcement for polymer composites. It is a must-have for polymer blend, natural polymer, and composite specialists, as well as for automobile manufacturers, waste mangers, and researchers and students in these fields.
Major Topics Covered:
Introduction to Synthetic Polymer-Polymer Composites
Polymer-Polymer Composites with Premade Fibrous Reinforcements
In situ Nano- and Microfibrillar Polymer-Polymer Composites
Single Polymer Composites
This book provides another approach for the replacement of glass- and other inorganic fibers as reinforcement for polymer composites. The materials utilized include synthetic, petroleum-based polymesr but prepared here they come in the form of fibers, micro- or nanofibrils. Although this approach does not have the advantages of natural fibers being biodegradable and thus environmentally harmless. At the same time, synthetic polymer-polymer composites seem to be much more acceptable from an environmental point of view than glass fiber reinforced composites because tof their organic in nature.
In addition to their environmental advantages, as compared to the polymer composites with mineral reinforcement with high loading rates, they are distinguished by much better specific mechanical properties. This property allows to manufacture light-weight products and constructions, a fact of particular importance in transportation vehicles and aircrafts.
An international team of researchers, working in this area, collected the state-of-the-art results and demonstrate the application of synthetic, but organic materials in the form of carbon fibers, carbon nanotubes,or fibers or micro- and nanofibrils as replacements for mineral reinforcements.
The book provides
- alternative ways for diminishing the environmental impact of polymer composites reinforced with mineral fillers,
- ways of reducing the wearing of processing equipment,
- approaches for preparation of polymers in the form of nano- and/or micro-sized materials and composites thereof,
- methods for preparation of single polymer composites,
- examples of nano- or microfibrillar single polymer composites
