Beschreibung

Biometric identity verification (BIV) offers a radical alternative to passports, PIN numbers, ID cards and driving licences. It uses physiological or behavioural characteristics such as fingerprints, hand geometry, and retinas to check a person's identity. It is therefore much less open to fraudulent use, which makes it ideal for use in voting systems, financial transactions, benefit payment administration, border control, and prison access.
This is the first book to provide business readers with an easy-to-read, non-technical introduction to BIV systems. It explains the background and then tells the reader how to get their system up and running quickly. It will be an invaluable read for practitioners, managers and IT personnel - in fact for anyone considering, or involved in, implementing a BIV system.
Julian Ashbourn was one of the pioneers in integrating biometric technology and has provided input into many prototype BIV systems around the world.
The only comprehensive overview of this area written specifically for the business community Written in an accessible and highly readable manner for the non-technical reader Comes with a CD-ROM containing biometric software developed by the author

From the reviews:

"Biometrics (BM) bring a new dimension to individual identity verification. … The book deals with this interesting subject both in theory and practise. It provides an in depth grounding in the subject of BM for all those interested in identity verification. … The book is written in a very readable and comfortable style." (Michal Hajný, Neural Network World, Vol. 16 (1), 2006)

"Ashbourn’s experience in designing biometric verification systems is obviously extensive, and this book attempts an overview of the field from its earliest incarnations to the present day. … Biometrics gives a nice summary of the process of designing identification systems … ." (Brooke L. Magnanti, Science & Justice, Vol. 41 (2), 2001)

"If you are contemplating installing biometric authentication or access control and are new to the field, this is the book for you. It outlines the types of devices available and takes you through the decisions and steps needed in a biometric project. Biometrics provides advanced identity verification but the book is not deep in technicalities and is easy reading." (Brian Peaker, The Computer Bulletin, March, 2001)
