Beschreibung

Annual Plant Reviews, Volume 23 A much clearer picture is now emerging of the fine structure ofthe plant cuticle and its surface, the composition of cuticularwaxes and the biosynthetic pathways leading to them. Studiesassessing the impact of UV radiation on plant life have emphasizedthe role of the cuticle and underlying epidermis as optical filtersfor solar radiation. The field concerned with the diffusivetransport of lipophilic organic non-electrolytes across the plantcuticle has reached a state of maturity. A new paradigm hasrecently been proposed for the diffusion of polar compounds andwater across the cuticle. In the context of plant ecophysiology, cuticular transpiration can now be placed in the perspective ofwhole-leaf water relations. New and unexpected roles have beenassigned to the cuticle in plant development and pollen-stigmainteractions. Finally, much progress has been made in understandingthe cuticle as a specific and extraordinary substrate for theinteractions of the plant with microorganisms, fungi andinsects. This volume details the major developments of recent years inthis important interdisciplinary area. It is directed atresearchers and professionals in plant biochemistry, plantphysiology, plant ecology, phytopathology and environmentalmicrobiology, in both the academic and industrial sectors.

"All authors are unmistakably experts in their respectivefields, and the editors assembled top quality internationalrepresentation, adding to the breadth of their volume." "It is a pleasure to study this meticulously edited volume, because each chapter is so well-organized and thoroughly documentedwith ample references. Research scientists and professionals fromdiverse disciplines, both academic and from the industrial sectorswill derive benefit from this book." Dorothea Bedigian, Research Associate, Missouri Botanical Gardenin Plant Science Bulletin, Volume 52, Number 4, 2006 (The BotanicalSociety of America) "Another instalment from Blackwell Publishing's noteworthyAnnual Plant Review Series. As always, it includes chapters on thelatest research on us its subject written by experts in the field. This is the first experiment-based comprehensive scientific bookdevoted the plant cuticle since the 1970's that is not acompilation of conference proceedings...[and] is of interest toecologists, environmental scientists, entomologists, andphytopathologists. In addition, information for horticulturalscientists is included. This volume is excellent and long overduesource of information about the current research on the plantcuticle." Marissa N.
