Pattern recognition is an important learning tool in theinterpretation of ECGs. Theability to clearly distinguish an abnormal ECG pattern from anormal variant in an emergency situation is an essential skill, butone that many pediatricians feel ill-prepared to utilizeconfidently. In Pediatric ECG Interpretation: An IllustrativeGuide, Drs. Deal, Johnsrude and Buck aim to address this issueby illustrating many of the ECG patterns a pediatric practitioneris likely to encounter.
ECG illustrations with interpretations are presented in severalcategories: normal children of all ages, acquired abnormalitiessuch as hypertrophy or electrolyte disorders, and common congenitalheart disease lesions. Later sections cover bradycardia,supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, and a basic sectionon pacemaker ECGs. Simple techniques used to interpret mechanismsof arrhythmias are described as a resource for practitioners incardiology, adult electrophysiology, or pediatrics who may not havea readily accessible resource for these ECG examples.
