Beschreibung

Specialised translation has received very little attention from academic researchers, but in fact accounts for the bulk of professional translation on a global scale and is taught in a growing number of university-level translation programmes. This book aims to provide three things. Firstly, it offers a description of what makes the approach to specialised translation distinctive from wider-ranging approaches to Translation Studies adopted by translation scholars and applied linguists. Secondly, unlike the traditional approach to specialised translation, this book explores a perspective on specialised translation that is much less focused on terminology and more on the function and reception of specialised (translated) texts. Finally, the author outlines a professionally-oriented hands-on approach to the teaching of specialised translation resulting from many years of teaching it to MA students. The book will be of interest to Translation Studies students and scholars, as well as professional translators who are interested in the theory on which their activity is based.

Federica Scarpa is Full Professor of English Language and Translation at the University of Trieste, Italy, where she teaches Specialised Translation

Stimmen zu »Research and Professional Practice in Specialised Translation«

“Its comprehensive approach with numerous examples provides an excellent insight into the field of specialised translation. Well-referenced and broadly oriented … . the book presents a very extensive state of the art … . There is no doubt that the book will itself function as a much sought-after introduction to the field of specialised translation for both translation students, scholars and possibly also professionals alike. However, and perhaps more importantly, this book could also be a springboard for future research.” (Sonia Vandepitte, The Journal of Specialised Translation, jostrans.org, Issue 37, January, 2022)

“Federica Scarpa seamlessly combines recent translation theory with all the stages of the real-world business regarding the translation of texts. With a wealth of detailed practical examples and exhaustive academic rigour, this book can only become a classic reference and point of departure for anyone remotely interested in the language of technical texts and specialised translation in the 21st century.” --David Katan, Professor of Language and Translation, University of Salento, Italy

“Scarpa’s ‘first stab at defining the scope of specialised translation’ is a must-read for trainees, trainers, academics and translators. In my 30+ years in the field I have never seen such a clear, compact analysis of specialised translation. Drawing on her wide experience as a translator, academic and trainer, Scarpa leaves no stone unturned in providing a comprehensive, thorough blueprint for specialised translation in her usual elegant style. Essential reading without a doubt!” --Catherine Way, Senior Lecturer in Translation, University of Granada, Spain

“This book offers a comprehensive study resource for specialised translation. Scarpa applies her expertise in the theory and practice of translation to explain key concepts, evaluate relevant scholarship and contribute to ongoing debates. She explores features of languages for special purposes and situates specialised translation in a translation studies context. Typical translation problems and strategies are addressed and all stages in specialised translation are examined closely, providing extensive guidance for professional practice and further research.”--Maeve Olohan, Senior Lecturer in Translation Studies, University of Manchester, UK
