Thinking about cultural differences around the world isn'tjust an intellectual exercise for managers working in anincreasingly global environment. Being able to communicateeffectively across cultural differences, understanding how tonegotiate complex social situations, and being familiar with thecustoms and norms of many cultures are important skills inorganizations today. Perhaps even more important than possessingthose essential pieces of cultural knowledge is the skill ofcultural adaptability--the willingness and ability torecognize, understand, and work effectively across culturaldifferences. Proficiency in cultural adaptability helps contemporary managers tobuild the relationships needed to achieve results in today'sglobal organizations, especially when those relationships areforged across borders and cultures. It enables them to interacteffectively with people different from themselves, whether thesepeople work on the next floor or on the other side of the world.
