The latest multi-disciplinary research in diversity - the key concept for people-environment relation in urban settings. Biological and human-cultural diversity are crucial aspects of sustainable life on this planet, a fact that was recognized when the United Nations declared 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity. Managing diversities in urban contexts, where more than half of the world’s population currently live, represents a fundamental aim for sustainable urban development. If this is to be achieved it requires collaboration among different scientific and technical disciplines, many of which are represented in this book. Drawing on a diversity of epistemological, theoretical, and methodological approaches is key to understanding people-environment relations and for promoting the quality of urban life. About the Series The book series Advances in People-Environmental Studies is a timely initiative to provide researchers with up-to-date reviews and commentaries on the diverse areas of people-environment studies that are of current concern. The series will focus on significant and currently debated themes. The books will be interdisciplinary, drawing on expert authors from the social, environmental, and design disciplines, especially those who are working at the interface between the design (e.g., architects, landscape planners, urban designers, urban planners) and the social sciences (e.g., environmental psychologists, sociologists, geographers). Each volume will report on the latest research and applications of research in the field. The series is meant to provide a bridge, not only between disciplines but also between cultures. The authors and contributors will come from many different countries and will be undertaking research and practicing in culturally diverse environments. David Uzzell, PhD, FBPsS, FRSA, is Professor of Environmental Psychology at the University of Surrey, and a Past-President of the International Association for People-Environment Studies (IAPS)
