It discusses the role of non-African critics and their sometimes problematic relationships with African writers, while also examining the attitudes of African writers themselves towards their societies. It questions some of the assumptions that have been made about the origin and development of theater on the continent, and its relationship to African traditions. It also focuses on the applicability of certain Western ideas in African contexts.
