The purpose of this book is to acquaint readers with the reality and character of human interiority as experienced through generalized empirical method (GEM) formulated by philosopher/theologian Bernard Lonergan and the intensive journal methodology as developed by psychologist Ira Progoff. The book guides readers in the task of discovering within themselves both GEM, a recurrent pattern of cognitive operations, and the vital life-directing influence of symbol-forming psyche. These self-discoveries heighten the readers' awareness that many major psychological constructs such as self-esteem and intrinsic motivation derive their fundamental meaning from GEM as it is constitutive of the human person, fed by symbol-forming psyche, and activated in human knowing and living. These heightened awarenesses provide the basis for a new psychology grounded in the self-appropriation of interiority.
William Reynolds Eidle
Appropriation Foundation Interiority Psychology Self
«...a very readable and accessible account of the foundations of a reoriented psychology. The integration of Lonergan and Progoff is convincing, and the dialogue with contemporary psychologists impressive. Particularly welcome are the applications to such notions as self-esteem and intrinsic motivation. This book is to be highly recommended for all who wish an integration of some important contemporary developments in human science.» (Robert M.Doran, Regis College, Toronto School of Theology, University of Toronto)
«Dr. Eidle has provided a meaningful and valuable contribution to psychology in elaborating the methodological issues associated with the self-appropriation of interiority. His teaching background as a psychologist and his long personal and professional experience both with Progoff's Intensive Journal process and Lonergan's generalized empirical method have made him a highly competent guide in leading serious readers along the path of their own self-appropriation. Eidle's careful focusing on psychology as an evocative science suggests that it may well serve as an invaluable resource in the entire field of human and social development.» (Thomas F. Duffy, Research Consultant, Applied Social Logic: The Charles S. Peirce Method of Inquiry, Program Coordinator, Dialogue House, N.Y., N.Y.)
