Beschreibung

This volume presents a systematic discussion of the leadingtheoretical approaches to social stratification. It is both anaccessible overview and a distinctive contribution to the analysisof class, status and power. John Scott argues that Max Weber's conceptual framework -reconstructed and enlarged - provides the basis for integratingwhat have been considered up to now as divergent approaches tostratification studies. Marxist theories of class and economicdivision, normative functionalist theories of status and culturaldivision, and elitist theories of command and authoritariandivision all find their place in the proposed framework. Eachtheoretical approach is illustrated through empiricalinvestigations undertaken by writers associated with them. Recentwork by Dahrendorf, Wright and Goldthorpe is also examined, and itis shown how their arguments contribute to a theoretical synthesisin the analysis of stratification. Stratification and Power will be much appreciated bystudents and academics alike in the social sciences. The clarity ofits style and the significance of its contribution have made it aleading text in its field.

Stimmen zu »Stratification and Power«

"John Scott offers a challenging agenda for comprehensive andcomparative analysis of social stratification." JohnWestergaard, University of Sheffield "A comprehensive and critical appraisal of classical and moderntheories of social stratification, and an important contribution tothe subject in its own right." David Lockwood, University ofEssex "John Scott ... brings impressive credentials to his aim withthis book to put social stratification firmly back into themainstream of sociological concerns ... Scott presents it withadmirable lucidity and adds distinctively significant underlinings... This book should appeal as a central teaching text, for itswide-ranging review of classical and modern literature in thefield, including a finely tuned final chapter on research anddebate about the 'working class'. But its strength goes well beyondthis, to offer a challenging agenda for work on a subject whosecontinuing sociological salience Scott persuasively demonstrates."Times Higher Education Supplement "Those who read this book will come away with the distinctimpression that the question of social stratification is very muchalive as we approach the new millennium." Work, Employment andSociety "I would strongly recommend this book to anybody interested inthe history and conceptualization of social stratification. It iswritten with insight and clarity, and will be an invaluableresource for students - and their teachers - working in thisfield." Political Studies
