Current anxiety about the future of news makes it opportune torevisit the notion of professionalism in journalism. Media expertSilvio Waisbord takes this pressing issue as his theme and arguesthat "professional journalism" is both a normative andanalytical notion. It refers to reporting that observes certainethical standards as well as to collective efforts by journaliststo exercise control over the news. Professionalism should not benarrowly associated with the normative ideal as it historicallydeveloped in the West during the past century.
