A "cluster" is a group of disk sectors. The operating system assigns a unique number to each cluster and then keeps track of files according to the clusters they use. Clustering is a vital methodology in the data storage world, with the objectives of cost effectiveness, high availability, flexibility, and scalability. The recent introduction of Storage Area Networks (SAN) has provided transparent, fast, and reliable access to data from any node in the cluster.
