Anger Treatment for People with Developmental Disabilities

Anger and aggression are prevalent problems among people withdevelopmental disabilities and constitute primary reasons for themto be admitted and re-admitted to institutions. They are also a keyreason for the prescribing of behaviour control and anti-psychoticmedication to this client group. Stimulated by growing research inthis area, mental health and criminal justice professionals havebegun to see the benefits of anger assessment andcognitive-behavioural anger treatment for people with developmentaldisabilities. There is no prior text to guide anger treatment provision tothis client group. This text presents a manual-guidedcognitive-behavioural anger treatment protocol, grounded in a solidtheoretical framework and empirical evidence for its efficacy inclinical practice. The assessment and treatment approach isdesigned to engage and motivate patients with recurrent anddeep-rooted anger problems and their manifestation in seriousaggressive behaviour. Accompanying the treatment protocol area number of worksheets, handouts, and exercise sheets forclinicians and clients that can be accessed online.
