The Dynamics of Flight The Equations Jean-Luc Boiffier SUPAÉROand ONERA - CERT, France The study of aircraft flight is based uponthe model formed by the flight dynamics equations, which arecomprehensively evolved in this book. These equations and theassociated hypotheses are the fundamental prerequisite of everystudy of flight dynamics. In this work, the equations are adaptedto the study of the atmospheric or spatial flight of a rigidairplane, for which a series of successive simplifications aremade, ranging from the flat and fixed Earth hypotheses to those oflongitudinal decoupling and linearised flight. Severalrepresentations of the equations are developed with a preciseformulation of the atmospheric perturbation influence (wind andturbulence). The definition of the equilibrium andpseudo-equilibrium notions is accompanied by an analytical andnumerical general method for equilibrium research. Next, thelinearisation and the decoupling operation, fundamental for thedynamic and analytical process of the equations, is developed.Major features include:
* General equations of flight dynamics with successivesimplifications and in several forms (calculation details appear inthe appendix)
* Precise formulation of atmospheric perturbation on theequations
* Analytical and numerical methods for equilibrium research andlinearisation
* A compendium of rigorous definitions and notations of thenumerous flight dynamics parameters
* Onboard measures equations
* Developments designed to solve practical difficulties in athorough and simple way
With its inclusion of both the theoretical and applied aspects offlight dynamics equations, this book serves as an essential toolfor engineers, researchers and students working in the fields ofaeronautics: flight dynamicists, automatic control systemsspecialists, aerodynamicists and specialists in structures.
