Error-controlled coding techniques are used to detect and/orcorrect errors that occur in the message transmission in a digitalcommunications system. Wireless personal channels used by mobilecommunications systems and storage systems for digital multimediadata all require the implementation of error control codingmethods. Demonstrating the role of coding in communication and datastorage system design, this text illustrates the correct use ofcodes and the selection of the right code parameters. Relevantdecoding techniques and their implementation are discussed indetail. Providing communication systems engineers and students withguidance in the application of error-control coding, this bookemphasizes the fundamental concepts of coding theory whileminimising the use of mathematical tools.
* Reader-friendly approach ti coding in communication systemsproviding examples of encoding and decoding, information theory andcriteria for code selection
* Thorogh descriptions of relevant application, including telephonyon satellite links, GSM, UMTS and multimedia standards, CD, DVD andMPEG
* Provides coverage of the fundamentals of coding and theapplications of codes to the design of real error controlsystems
* End of chapter problems to test and develop understanding
