Research and development on liquid crystal display (LCD) backlighttechnologies are becoming increasingly important due to the fastgrowth of the LCD business. Backlight technologies contribute tofunctional improvements of LCDs in terms of wide colourreproduction, uniformity improvements of luminance and colourtemperature, high luminance, long life, less power consumption,thinner backlight unit, as well as cost. As LCD panel technologyprogresses, the lighting technology that provides the illuminationfor the panel must similarly evolve. LCD Backlights is written by a global panel of leadingresearchers and practitioners in this field from both academia andindustry. The first part of LCD Backlights details thevariety of applications of backlights including those in LCD-TV, PCmonitors and mobile devices. The second part is a full examinationof the different light sources that are used including the latesttechnological trends in amongst others, cold cathode fluorescentlamps (CCFLs), mercury-free fluorescent lamps and light emittingdiodes (LEDs). The final part of the book analyses the opticalcomponent of backlights such as diffusers and brightnessenhancement films.
