This important textbook provides an introduction to the concepts ofthe newly developed extended finite element method (XFEM) forfracture analysis of structures, as well as for other relatedengineering applications.
One of the main advantages of the method is that it avoids anyneed for remeshing or geometric crack modelling in numericalsimulation, while generating discontinuous fields along a crack andaround its tip. The second major advantage of the method is that bya small increase in number of degrees of freedom, far more accuratesolutions can be obtained. The method has recently been extended tononlinear materials and other disciplines such as modelling contactand interface, simulation of inclusions and holes, moving andchanging phase problems, and even to multiscale analyses.
The book is self contained, with summaries of both classical andmodern computational techniques. The main chapters include acomprehensive range of numerical examples describing variousfeatures of XFEM.
