This reference has been written for health professionals workingwith people (primarily adults) who have learning disabilities, fortheir staff and carers, and for students. It answers questions suchas: why do physiotherapists work with people who have learningdifficulties?; how do problems associated with learning disabilityaffect each other?; and what are "normalisation" and "inclusion"?
Section One describes the underlying therapy, and coversworldwide social policy developments which have influencedattitudes towards learning disability. It discusses the medicationfor associated conditions, along with their side effects and impacton physical ability. Section Two focuses on assessment, and coversthe multidisciplinary structures within which assessments areundertaken. The last section describes eight practical methods ofphysical treatment and management ranging from positioningprofoundly disabled people to working through sport.
