Beschreibung

This book deals with the design and integration of chemicalprocesses, emphasizing the conceptual issues that are fundamentalto the creation of the process. Chemical process design requiresthe selection of a series of processing steps and their integrationto form a complete manufacturing system. The text emphasizes boththe design and selection of the steps as individual operations andtheir integration. Also, the process will normally operate as partof an integrated manufacturing site consisting of a number ofprocesses serviced by a common utility system. The design ofutility systems has been dealt with in the text so that theinteractions between processes and the utility system andinteractions between different processes through the utility systemcan be exploited to maximize the performance of the site as awhole. Chemical processing should form part of a sustainable industrialactivity. For chemical processing, this means that processes shoulduse raw materials as efficiently as is economic and practicable, both to prevent the production of waste that can be environmentallyharmful and to preserve the reserves of raw materials as much aspossible. Processes should use as little energy as economic andpracticable, both to prevent the build-up of carbon dioxide in theatmosphere from burning fossil fuels and to preserve reserves offossil fuels. Water must also be consumed in sustainable quantitiesthat do not cause deterioration in the quality of the water sourceand the long-term quantity of the reserves. Aqueous and atmosphericemissions must not be environmentally harmful, and solid waste tolandfill must be avoided. Finally, all aspects of chemicalprocessing must feature good health and safety practice. It is important for the designer to understand the limitationsof the methods used in chemical process design. The best way tounderstand the limitations is to understand the derivations of theequations used and the assumptions on which the equations arebased. Where practical, the derivation of the design equations hasbeen included in the text. The book is intended to provide a practical guide to chemicalprocess design and integration for undergraduate and postgraduatestudents of chemical engineering, practicing process designers andchemical engineers and applied chemists working in processdevelopment. Examples have been included throughout the text. Mostof these examples do not require specialist software and can beperformed on spreadsheet software. Finally, a number of exerciseshave been added at the end of each chapter to allow the reader topractice the calculation procedures.
