This volume deals with the excellently exposed rocks of the British Tertiary Volcanic Province on the west coast of Scotland. Since this line of volcanoes was formed 50-60 million years ago, rain, snow and the action of the sea have reduced the volcanoes to their roots, exposing their complex plumbing.

The production is handsome. the volume is both well written and well edited. the two authors have done their job admirably. the index is comprehensive and well selected and the references are complete. the book gives an excellent account of the British Tertiary Province. Mineralogical Magazine; a most readable and succinct text, which flows well and which covers every aspect of mineralogy and petrology, including petrogenesis, and who said what when. it is a well-ordered, easily consulted catalogue of carefulyy constrained facts which will be in much demand by students, all libraries will have to purchase it. - Journal of Petrology;.for geologists unfamiliar with the numerous world-famous sites within the BTVP, this volume is an excellent introduction and source of key data.the authors are to be congratulated on the production of a superb volume.
